Last Friday night, I couldn't sleep. We've all been there, and I experience insomnia less than most; much less than my wife. But, I have developed a strategy for those rare nights when I simply won't fall asleep. I make up lists. My most common one is Bible verses from A to Z, but I'll admit, many times the list is not that spiritual. One night, when I couldn't get comfortable on a camp bed in Rhode Island, I tried to come up with 100 pitchers who have played for the Atlanta Braves. I think I was around number 47 when I dozed off. Another time, while trying to sleep on the floor of a church basement in Vermont, I made a list of TV shows by the number:
One Tree Hill
Two Broke Girls
Three's Company
For a while, I wondered if I might still be awake to include "the 6 Million Dollar Man" in the list! But I think I was asleep before 60 Minutes.
So, last weekend, when I was wide awake at 3:00 AM, I decided to think about TV catch phrases from A to Z. I dozed off along the way, but I have continued the list and it's now almost complete. Like any list, there are criteria. For example, I did not want catch phrases from game shows (Come on down!), talk shows (Here's Johnny) or reality shows (You're fired.) There is one from a variety show (V) and another from a newscast (T) even though I tried to avoid these as well. Some are whole phrases, some are single words, and at least two are not words at all (A, O). So, with that in mind, here's the list:
A: "Aaaay" Fonzie, from Happy Days
B: "Book'em Danno" From Hawaii 5-0
C: "Cut -it- out" Joey Gladstone from Full house
D: "Did I do that?" Urkel from Family Matters
E: "Eat my shorts." Bart Simpson
F: "Ferret Face" I'll admit, this is not really a catch phrase, it was a recurring nick name Trapper and Hawkeye gave Frank Burns in the early seasons of MASH
G: "Good night, John Boy." The Waltons
H: "Hi. I'm Larry; this is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl." Larry from Newhart
I: "I know nothing." Shultz from Hogan's Heros
J: "Just the facts." Sargent Joe Friday from Dragnet (I'll admit this one I found on a web site. J had me stumped.)
K: "Kiss my grits." Flo from Alice
L: "Lucy...You got some splainin' to do." Ricky from I Love Lucy
M: "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha." Jan form the Brady Bunch (Actually, this was never a catch phrase. Jan only said it once in all the seasons it was on. It was then included in a spoof movie that came out years later and it caught on.)
N: "Na-nu, Na-nu." Mork from Mork and Mindy
O: "Oooo, oooo. Oooo, oooo, oooo" Arnold Horshak from Welcome Back Kotter
P: "Pow! Right in the kisser." Ralph Kramden, from the honeymooners
Q: "Quick, robin, to the Batmobile." Batman (Admittedly, this phrase didn't always start with the word 'quick' but, hey, it's 'Q' we're dealing with here.
R: "Roobey-roo." Scoobey Doo
S: "Surprise, surprise, surprise." Gomer Pyle
T: "That's the way it is." Walter Cronkite
U: "Up your nose with a rubber hose." Juan Epstein from Welcome Back, Kotter
V: "Very interesting." Arte Johnson from Laugh In
W: "Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis." Arnold from Different Strokes
X: Come on, it's X. you come up with one!
Y:"Yabba Dabba Doo" Fred Flintstone
Z: "Ze plane, ze plane." Tattoo from Fantasy Island
