The Casco Inn is a very pleasant, rural home for senior citizens who do not have serious dementia and are ambulatory, but who need basic help and supervision. They are one of the best audiences in the course of our year. A few days ago I was there to do a 45 minute show in their big living room, and I'm glad I went.
As I was setting up, one woman kept saying to the folks around her, "I hate magic shows. My brother, John, did magic. He always said, 'Watch this. You'll love it,' but I didn't I always hated it." Hmmm. Sounds like a challenge to me!
Also prior to actually starting, I recognized Helen, a lady who used to go to our church. Sue and I know her daughter and son-in-law more than we know her, but I approached her to say hi. She did not recognize me, but I told her that she had taught Sue how to make Swedish S's and O's Christmas cookies. I thanked her even though she didn't remember that day.
Once I began the show, Helen was laughing and enjoying everything, as were most of the rest of the room. After my second dove production, I explained that, while they were a pair, the female was eight years old and the male was less than a year. I joked that she liked chasing younger men. A lady with a heavy French accent spoke up and said, "Hey, that's what life is all about!" I can't wait until I'm old enough to say anything I want whenever I want!
After the show, I brought Jeremiah, my rabbit, around to meet all the guests, packed up and headed home, satisfied with a pleasant time spent with many sweet, but all too often lonely, people.
