Every year for at least 10 years, we have been hired to juggle at the Galilee Baptist Church's AWANA club in Gorham, Maine. Awana is an international kids' ministry - we visited them in Ecuador and Paraguay - for kids from preschool through the eighth grades. It's mission is to teach kids the Bible and encourage them to live out their faith confidently. Galilee's AWANA club is smaller this year, so they opened it up to the whole congregation. Many adults and families came out, which created a nice, family atmosphere.
I did this year's show solo, as our 14 year old, Rose, had dance class, which meant my wife had to get her to and from the studio. Doing this same gig every year, I try to make a point of doing new things each year. Instead of opening with my usual three ball routine to Mahalia Jackson's "When the Saints go Marching In", I opened with Psalm 150; a musical juggling routine including whistling diabolos, chiming devil sticks, jingle bell balls, etc.
One of my doves got loose and flew around the room after he was produced from 'inside' a balloon. Pretty funny, but at least the audience knew he was real. The most memorable moment, though, was probably the disappearing champagne bottle. Being a Baptist church, it may very well have been the first time such an item was ever within their building. While it may have made a few of the leaders a little nervous when I first brought it out, the effect went well, and got a round of applause.
In the end, the show was successful, the audience loved it, and the Word of God was presented in a memorable way.
