Last week, we performed at a mother - daughter banquet at the Buxton (ME) Methodist Church. It was on a Monday evening, and probably 40 women of all ages were present. We were invited to join them for dinner before the show; like most church pot lucks there was a lot of variety and it was all good.
Then it was show time. We opened with a dove production followed by a transformation of the dove into a rabbit. Animals are always a hit. Then I did my three ball routine. From there we went through a series of Bible stories. When we got to the "Why Worry" illusions, something happened that has never happened in one of our shows ever before. When we got to the part about "look at the birds of the air; they do not plant or harvest or store in barns..." at which time Rose produces yet another dove from a dove pan - the dove had laid an egg in the pan!
We were so taken aback that we didn't continue with the narration. I held it up and explained to the audience that this was not a set up, and that in over 20 years of working with doves, this had never happened before. I also assured them that it was not a fertilized egg, as her mate is only three months old. (See prior blog entitled "Rastelli" ). Although her mate is fully grown, he is not sexually mature yet. Then I joked, "Yeah, she's a cougar." In this room full of ladies, that brought the house down. In fact, after the show, one 60-something woman came up to me and said, "I'm a cougar, too. My husband is eight months younger."
The rest of the show progressed very well, and ended with the lost coin parable. I reminded the audience that God desires what is rightfully his, and that would be each and every one of us. Like the lady in the parable, He will do all that is in his power to find the lost and bring us back to Him, to whom we rightly belong.
Not bad for the only man in the church that night.
