The Advent Christian Church was on the verge of closing, but Reverend Laura-Leigh had a different idea. Already retired from her first career, Pastor knew this low income neighborhood needed a local church; a church that could be walked to, a church where the leadership was part of the neighborhood. She had to jump through many hoops, but she knew the Lord was on her side, and she has been pastor of this neighborhood church for over eight years, now.
Focusing on the children, Laura-Leigh has been tireless in reaching out to a neighborhood steeped in unemployment, drugs and single parent homes. The kids in the area clearly love her, and the parents are learning to trust her. Slowly, her congregation is growing, and God's light is shining a little brighter each day.
For the past seven Februarys, she has had the Supreme Court Jesters up to do a show. It is the neighborhood's 'Cabin Fever Reliever". This year my daughter, Rose and I did the show; My wife, Sue, stayed home to catch up on some things as we were leaving for the weekend early the next morning. I enjoy traveling with Rose, and I treated her to Subway for supper before arriving at the church.
The show was well attended by neighbors of all ages. they clearly don't get to see performances like this - sacred or secular - in this neighborhood. My juggling has been especially strong in shows lately, which is always an encouragement, and Rose is always excellent. Many people wanted to talk with us after the show, and they were fascinated with both the rabbit and the dove. I know spring hasn't even started yet, but I am already looking forward to next February, when we can again be, in some small way, a part of what God is doing in Auburn, Maine.
