My 7th and 8th grade juggling troupe was invited to join our school's 6th grade class's ministry outing for December. As part of Windham Christian Academy's program, all classes are required to have a class ministry. While my middle school class's ministry is a Gospel presentation through the use of juggling, illusions and skits (and this year, gymnastics, dance and singing), the sixth grade visits a local assisted living home each month.
The sixth grade teacher, Peter LaGasse, is not just a coworker, but a friend of mine. He invited our class to be part of his class's ministry trip as they threw a Christmas party for the residents of the Casco Inn. As most of my students had 'Mr. L' in previous years, and had gotten to know Casco Inn residents, we were all eager to take part. we're so glad we did.
After an initial meet and greet time, during which all the kids were wonderful mixing with the senior citizens, the students who comprise the middle school band played a variety of Christmas carols. The senior citizens were quick to sing along. After they played, there was a brief transition and then the LOL team did one juggling routine. One by one they came up as Steven Curtis Chapman's "Dive" played in the background. Jaclyn performed machetes for the first time, and, being in a small room, had to do them on her knees. Rose, who also happens to be my daughter, also did machete juggling, including a double flip and an under the leg throw. Sebastien bounce juggled for the first time in a show. He is my first student to perform this in years.
After the entertainment, there was more time to socialize. Several students prayed with residents; there were hugs, laughter, and many 'merry Christmases' as we enjoyed cookies and punch. It was great to combine with another class to share this special event.
