Reflections on Right Here, Right Now, 2012
Right Here, Right Now is a day of workshops, performances and speakers geared to help those who are reaching out to young people in crisis and life controlling behaviors. This year's RHRN was help on Saturday, May 12. Workshops addressed: eating disorders, criminal behavior, addiction, crisis pregnancy, self-injury, suicide, mentoring, attachment disorder, round table discussions and more. This event, our second annual, is based on the premise that, while Christian schools, youth groups, churches and families are offering help for these issues from a unique perspective - the spiritual component - we are lacking in professional training. This is an opportunity to fill that need while offering the spiritual component as well. We had top of the line workshop leaders including a psychiatrist, another MD, several professional counselors, the chaplain from a psychiatric hospital, residential treatment personnel and others.
So what was the best part of the day?
BAWT's two sets of worship music that had people singing, praising and dancing?
Pastor Fred words of encouragement, embellished with renditions of his songs "Jesus is Victor" (which I use in our show) and his new single "The River Didn't Part"?
Naomi's two heartfelt, original poems?
The drama performance by Master's Commission, Portsmouth?
The round table discussions for teens and parents?
The 15 plus workshops covering pertinent topics in small, intimate groups?
Kelvin Walker's closing address on our worth in Christ, preached with all the conviction and energy we've come to expect?
Yes to all of these, as well as the fellowship opportunities we had with people we've worked with throughotu New England for years. All but one of the New England states were represented by the people presenting, and Kelvin came all the way from New york.
But perhaps the best parts of the day include the atheist girl who cam ewith a friend looking for help through a life crisis. Or the Christian school student who talked for an extended time with one of our local clergy about suicide. Or the countless professionals who got help and direction on how to help youth in crisis. It was a great day of learning and networking. Thanks to everyone who made it possible!
