Ever since I started performing as a teenager, there is one day each year that I know I will have work... October 31st. This year was no different. It actually started at work, when Windham Christian Academy had its kick off to one of our biggest fund raisers in the course of a school year. It is a wreath sale, and in the hopes of energizing the student body, I was asked to do a routine. I did a juggling routine in which I accompany myself musically with a kazoo. It's a silly routine with a punch line about how my kazoo ditty is actually the Hallelujah Chorus if played backwards. After the routine, I stressed the importance of getting out to sell wreaths:
"If you don't sell wreaths, the school may not have enough money.
If the school doesn't have enough money, they may not be able to pay their teachers,
If the teachers don't get paid, they may have to sell personal items to pay their bills.
If they have to sell personal items to pay bills, they may end up selling their clothes and vehicles;
If they have to sell their clothes and vehicles, they will have to walk to school naked;
Don't make your teachers walk to school naked... Get out and sell wreaths!"
After sharing these words of wisdom during the day, I had another full length performance in the evening. It was at our church and it was for a children's party (although there were probably as many adults present as kids.) The turn our was the best I've seen for our Halloween event, and I did a 40 minute gig after the kids had over an hour to play games and win candy and other prizes. Rose was invited to a party at a friend's house, so she and Sue were not with me for this show. Again I opened with my kazoo routine, but I led into more routines about faith. It was a fun evening for all.
