Last weekend, our daughter, Rose, and her friend, Corban, auditioned for a local talent show named the Lakes Region's Got Talent. They made the cut, and the first round of actual competition was today. It was in the beautiful venue of our local "Magic Lantern" movie theatre, which also includes a large stage.
There were seven acts in the first day of competition. Another seven will perform next week, then the top four from each will compete in the final round. Sometimes I get nervous before I go on stage, but never do I get more nervous than I was for the girls today. When I do a program, I can do last minute checks of all my props, music, and so forth. Today I could do nothing but sit and hope the girls thought of everything.
In the end, they did. Their music was cued, their props were all present and accounted for, and they looked terrific. They added to their repertoire from last weeks routine, with Corban doing rings and Rose adding a few diabolo tricks. They looked great, and had some, but not many, drops.
Unfortunately, the girls were not one of the four acts moved on to the next round (made all the harder to swallow due to the fact that Corban's younger sister did advance for her performance in a dance routine with four other girls). The only two adults to perform today, both singer / guitar players who sang original songs, also moved on, as did an eight year old singer who belted out a show tune with a voice well beyond her years. Rose was disappointed, of course, but it was a good opportunity to teach her that every group of judges looks for something different. Furthermore, the girls put their routine together in one afternoon, and created it entirely themselves. They should be very proud of themselves, and I know they are.
