Being teachers, my wife and I have summers off, which makes this time of year a busy one for our ministry. For example, over the past two days I've done two shows at two very special homes.
The first of this pair of shows was at CASA, a new venue for us. Sue joined me for this show in the coastal city of Scarboro, Maine. The venue was a nursing facility, but not for geriatric patients, but for intellectually disabled clients. We were honored to be the entertainment for their annual family day, which this year, fittingly, had a carnival theme. This was also Sue's first time running our new sound system, and she handled it perfectly.
The show was outside, so I was able to do fire juggling, among other routines. I did not know whether it would be indoors or outdoors when we left the house that morning, so I brought two doves in case it was inside. Once I realized we would be in their courtyard, I debated with myself, and decided to do one dove production in the show. While there's always the possibility of escape, I felt it was worth the risk. As it is, the production worked perfectly. In fact, the show as a whole went off very well. Afterwards, one of the guests (a dad or brother of a resident, perhaps) complimented how well the Gospel story tied together. from beginning to end.
Then yesterday I had a show at another special home, the Casco Inn. This is an assisted living home for the elderly. Although older, the audience was sharp and energetic. In a similar but opposite twist from the previous day's show, I expected it to be outside in their backyard, but due to the hear and humidity, the staff decidec to do it in their living room. Having prepared for an outside show, I had a lot of props with me that I couldn't use, including several fire props. Nonetheless, I had enough to do a 50 minute show for these very enthusiastic people. After the show, as I brought Zeke - our rabbit - around to meet the audience, one lady said, "Thank you especially for sharing the Gospel." I asked if I presented it in a way that was clear - always a high priority for me - and she assured me it was.
And that's what matters the most.
