I almost didn't have a single blog for September, 2024. It's not that I haven't seen God at workthis month; It's not that I haven't had shows to report back on (sorry to anyone who wanted to read about my visit to your camp, facility, church, etc. I had a great time visiting you all, honest.) In the end, there are two primary reasons I haven't been blogging:
1. Lack of inspiration. Sometimes I have something I want to say so badly, I don't rest until it's written down. These are the blogs that read like devotional entries, letters to the editor or journal entries. I simply haven't had a lot of deep thought lately. I hope I do soon. Seriously. I almost had one meaningful thought recently. It was about getting older and knowing when to let go of things we used to be able to do well. I even have a title: "The Who, Willie Mays and Joe Biden". I just haven't developed the idea enough yet. And that, in itself, is a little ironic when you think about it.
2. Busyness. This, of course, is the standard excuse of all who live in our modern world. Oh for a couple days back in Uganda, where playing with kids at the orphanage was often followed up by playing with the kids in the neighborhood, then hanging out in front of the house with the local adults. But that's not how life is here, at least not for Sue and me. Our daughter, Naomi, and her family have moved in with us for a period of time. This is so much fun; there's so much laughter. But preparing the house - which had gotten used to being an empty nest- for three more people has been time consuming. Also, I am continuing my role as spiritual life director at Windham Christian Academy. I love this role, and it may be the job I'm most suited for ever, but it involves preparing two chapel services a week. In truth, this is where most of my creative energy goes these days.
Meanwhile, Sue is taking on more responsibility at our church's food pantry, and we are both working (along with other old timers) at coming along our new, young - but excellent - new pastor. When I do find some down time before my bedtime, which has mysteriously become 8:30 recently, I prefer to play games with the family, toss a football with my new 14 year old grandson (or better yet, go to his JV games at our local high school), and watch reruns of the 80's classic sitcom "Newhart" (which, by the way, is the funniest show EVER, and I'd fight anyone who says otherwise!)
So there has been a drought in my blogging. I hope to slow down in other areas, and even more so, to be inspired to write again. But for now, Larry, Darryl and Darryl have once again walked into the Stratford Inn, and I'm wanting a good laugh. You'll have to excuse me.
