Each evening over the first week of summer vacation, I was blessed to be part of Little Falls Baptist Church's VBS. This country church is in Gorham, Maine, and the pastor is also a part time teacher where I work, and we have been looking forward to this for weeks.
Each night opene with praise and worship songs that were kid friendly but also interesting enough for the adults. These songs were played on video, and were a fun, energetic way to start out the evenings.
Once Pastor Tony opened in prayer, I came on and did a 20-25 minute set. I remember when doing five nights with the same audience would have really stretched my amount of routines, but it was no problem at all. The audience was great every night, too.
After my presentation, there was a rotation of four groups. Although I don't know what the other three stations were, mine was used to review the lessons from the show, do a few more routines in a more intimate setting, and teach some basic juggling, magic, and mime skills. On Wednesday night, my wife, Sue, came and taught balloon sculpture during these sessions.
I appreciate Pastor Tony and his wife Nikki's view that VBS is meant to be a fun time for neighborhood kids to get an introduction to church, hear some of the basic stories and doctrines, but not to be too pushy. Pushy just doesn't work, besides being-well- pushy. One of the neat things is that several families from a local Russian Baptist church were present. Most are children of immigrants.
I hope to serve alongside Tony and Nikki again soon.
