Last weekend I did two shows at Maine's Somerset County Jail in the small town of Madison. The first show/service was for the men and the second the women. The jail currently has a population of about 100 inmates, and about 50 came out between the two groups. Not a bad turn out.

Unfortunately, the show for the guys started late. Not only was one unit late arriving, but then they had to give out medications for those who need them. I understand that a jail of 100 people has more important things in their day than making sure the Christian juggler starts his chapel service on time, but it was disappointing nonetheless. Because of the late start and needing to be ready for the women to come in at 3:00, I had to cut a few routines. However, the guys seemed blessed by the show and appreciative that I came.

With the ladies I had the full hour. It was nice not to have to rush and make sure the Gospel message of forgiveness and grace was as clear and thorough as possible. We had a lot of fun, too.

After it was over, I had a few minutes to converse with the group of about 17 women. One of the ladies spoke fondly of attending Living Waters summer camp as a child. Although we have never performed at this particular camp, it was a huge encouragement to me to hear her speak so fondly of this part of her life. As a seasonal director of a Christian summer camp myself, it was great to hear from a 40 something adult how much camp meant to her, and continues to mean a lot to her.


It is a two hour drive each way from my home to this particular jail, so it makes for a long day, especially when I did two services. However, as always, it was worth it for the pure joy I got out of doing the gigs. I trust it was equally worth it to the 50 inmates to come out for the shows.
