LITCHFIELD, MAINE — An evening stroll for a teen-age couple at a Christian revival turned into a life-or-death struggle in the woods after a gunman kidnapped the woman and shot her friend three times as he escaped. Jason Stephenson, 18, of Pittston staggered a half-mile to seek help at the Salt of the Earth Christian Fair after being shot. He was in critical condition Sunday. Fairgoers prayed as police searched the woods for five hours before capturing Paul Bonin, 18, of Litchfield early Sunday. Carolyn Meyer, 17, a Swiss national, was treated for scratches. Bonin approached the couple in a cemetery near the fairgrounds Saturday night, ordering them at gunpoint into the woods, police said. Stephenson was shot as he ran for help. Meyer ran away from Bonin as police closed in.
